Filmmaker and transgender trailblazer Lilly Wachowski has responded to right-wing zealots co-opting\u00a0The Matrix<\/em>\u00a0for their \u201ccrazy ideologies\u201d, explaining that she has had to \u201clet go\u201d of the film.<\/p>\n

Lilly Wachowski<\/a>, who wrote and directed the 1999 sci-fi smash\u00a0The Matrix<\/em>\u00a0with her sister Lana Wachowski, reflected on the film\u2019s meaning being misinterpreted during a chat with comedian Caleb Hearon on his podcast,\u00a0So True with Caleb Hearon<\/em>.<\/p>\n

After Wachowski mentioned the film franchise, which is one of the most successful film franchises of all time, Hearon questioned her on how she deals with the \u201closer freaks\u201d who\u00a0use the film to push right-wing narratives<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike, why are members of the Trump administration talking about\u00a0The Matrix<\/em>\u00a0like it was made for them and their ideology when it came from you, and that\u2019s not you at all?\u201d Hearon asked.<\/p>\n

One of the key scenes from the first film to be\u00a0appropriated by the right-wing<\/a>\u00a0involves Keanu Reeves as Neo, in which he decides to take the red pill over the blue pill, in order to escape The Matrix\u2019s simulation and wake up to reality.<\/p>\n

The term \u201credpilling\u201d has become popularised within right-wing circles \u2013 particularly MAGA supporters \u2013 to indicate when someone realises the so-called truth about modern society.<\/p>\n

This can include men who become aware of men being, as they deem it, controlled by feminism, or cisgender, heterosexual people who believe that there is an LGBTQ+ ideology being pushed upon them.<\/p>\n

Responding to Hearon, Wachowski suggested that she was unsurprised by how right-wingers had co-opted the film\u2019s message, and that she had to learn to accept that she couldn\u2019t control how people interpreted it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t make stuff anymore with the idea that I want it to reach as many people as possible. I make to make, right?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight-wing ideology appropriates absolutely everything. They appropriate left-wing points of view and they mutate them for their own propaganda, for their own to obfuscate what the real message is. This is what fascism does. And so, of course, that\u2019s going to happen,\u201d she added. \u201cThey do it with absolutely everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to let go of your work,\u201d she continued. \u201cPeople are gonna interpret it however they interpret it.<\/p>\n

\u201cI look at all of the crazy, mutant theories around\u00a0The Matrix<\/em>\u00a0films and the crazy ideologies that those films helped create and I just go, \u2018What are you doing? No! That\u2019s wrong!\u2019 But I have to let it go to some extent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wachowski added that she had come to terms with the fact that she would not be able to \u201cmake absolutely every person believe what [she] initially intended\u201d.<\/p>\n

Far from the narrative being pushed by right-wingers, Wachowski has previously confirmed fan theories that\u00a0The Matrix<\/em>\u00a0is actually a metaphor for the trans experience.<\/p>\n

In 2020, during an interview with\u00a0Netflix Film Club, Wachowski said that the \u201cworld wasn\u2019t quite ready\u201d to hear the true meaning behind the film series when it first came out.<\/p>\n

For years, LGBTQ+ fans of the films have assumed that the red pills are representative of red estrogen pills, while the double life led by Neo \u2013 also known as Thomas Anderson \u2013 could represent the closeted trans experience.<\/p>\n

Neither Lilly Wachowski nor her sister Lana were publicly out as trans women when the first film came out. Lana revealed that she is trans in 2008, while Lilly did so in 2016.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love how meaningful those films are to trans people and the way that they come up to me say, \u2018Those movies saved my life,\u2019\u201d Lilly Wachowski told Netflix Film Club.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause when you talk about transformation, specifically in the world of science fiction, which is just about imagination and world-building and the idea of the seemingly impossible becoming possible, that\u2019s why it speaks it to them so much.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m grateful I can be a part of throwing them a rope along their journey.\u201d<\/p>\n
