According to FCC Chairman Brendan Carr, Kimmel\u2019s comments\u2014specifically suggesting that Kirk\u2019s accused assassin was a \u201cMAGA Republican\u201d\u2014crossed a line. Carr has threatened \u201cimmediate action\u201d not only against Kimmel but also against ABC and its parent company, Disney. The allegations? Deliberately misleading the public and using broadcast platforms in a way that, in Carr\u2019s words, fails to serve the \u201cpublic interest.\u201d<\/p>\n
On his late-night show, Kimmel directly addressed the killing of Charlie Kirk, which has dominated national headlines. During his monologue, the host told viewers:<\/p>\n
\u201cWe hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement, shared widely on social media, immediately went viral and sparked outrage among critics who argued that Kimmel was spreading misinformation. Authorities have not confirmed that suspect Tyler Robinson was affiliated with any political movement, much less tied directly to Trump\u2019s MAGA base.<\/p>\n
Carr did not mince words in his response. Speaking on conservative commentator Benny Johnson\u2019s podcast, the FCC Chairman called the comments \u201ctruly sick\u201d and insisted that Kimmel\u2019s remarks could not go unpunished.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we see stuff like this, look, we can do this the easy way or the hard way,\u201d Carr said. \u201cThese companies can find ways to change conduct on Kimmel, or there\u2019s going to be additional work for the FCC ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n
The \u201cadditional work\u201d Carr referred to could include investigations, penalties, or even challenges to the broadcast licenses of ABC affiliates that continue to air\u00a0Jimmy Kimmel Live!<\/em>.
