February 24, 2010, started as any other day would at SeaWorld, Orlando.<\/p>\n

Hundreds of families flocked to the theme park, eager to see the main attraction: impressive 22.5 feet, 12,500-pound orcas putting on a show for them.<\/p>\n

The story is tragic for many reasons. Not only did Dawn adore Tilikum, but it seemed he was immensely fond of her, too.<\/p>\n

The crowds that gathered to watch the trainer and orca that day were subject to a terrifying sight: the 40-year-old being dragged to her demise.<\/p>\n

Then, there\u2019s the tale of the captive creature, who\u2019d been kept isolated for human entertainment for decades.<\/p>\n

This is the story of Dawn Brancheau and how her untimely passing shone a newfound light on the marine park industry.<\/p>\n

Dawn\u2019s Love Of Marine Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Born in April 1969 in Cedar Lake, Indiana, Dawn was the youngest of the six LoVerde siblings.<\/p>\n

Her love for sea life was cemented after a family holiday to Orlando, where she saw a show involving Shamu, one of the first-ever captive orcas.<\/p>\n

After the show, Dawn decided when she grew up, she wanted to be a Shamu trainer at SeaWorld.<\/p>\n

Although she\u2019d never get to train Shamu\u2014she sadly passed in the early 1970s\u2014Dawn\u2019s love for whales would never leave her.<\/p>\n

She obtained a degree in animal behavior from the University of South Carolina and embarked on a career working with sea life.<\/p>\n

She began by working with dolphins before securing her dream job at SeaWorld in 1994, training sea lions.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t just sea life Dawn loved, but all animals. She rescued dogs, rabbits, ducks, and chickens when she wasn\u2019t at work. At any given time, her home was often filled with animals she was rehabilitating.<\/p>\n

While working at SeaWorld Orlando, Dawn was introduced to stunt water skier Scott Brancheau, whom she would date and later marry in 1996.<\/p>\n

That year would be a big one for Dawn; not only did she get married, but she also got a promotion at work. She finally got to train orcas, something she\u2019d been dreaming of since she was a little girl.<\/p>\n

Keeping up with the orcas was no easy feat. In fact, to ensure she was fit enough to give the orcas the intensity required to train them, Dawn kept a rigorous fitness routine.<\/p>\n

This involved cycling, heavy weights, and running regular marathons. After all, wild orcas swim anywhere between 40 and 150 miles per day.<\/p>\n

The captive whales had a lot of energy they were unable to expel in captivity, so their trainer had to have superior fitness to at least try and match their stamina.<\/p>\n

As the years went by, Dawn became something of a celebrity.<\/p>\n

She was, quite literally, SeaWorld\u2019s poster child, with her face adorning many of the theme park posters and banners. She appeared on TV shows, gave interviews, and became part of the attraction itself.<\/p>\n

Her clear love for the orcas and her ability to interact with the whales was joyous for the public to see, though even Dawn would admit it wasn\u2019t without its dangers.<\/p>\n

Sadly, on February 24, 2010, those dangers became very real.<\/p>\n

The Day Of The Incident\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

That fateful day, Dawn had successfully completed her \u201cDine with Shamu\u201d show alongside other trainers.<\/p>\n

The crowd, as they always did, applauded the spectacle: after all, Dawn had interacted with a 12,000-pound male orca, guiding Tilikum around the pool as they ate their buffet.<\/p>\n

That was the premise of the show: guests would eat their meals as they watched the orcas eat their meals and perform tricks.<\/p>\n

Little did the cheering crowd know that Tilikum had a ruthless past. In fact, he had been responsible for multiple human fatalities over his years in captivity.<\/p>\n

The first was in 1991, when Keltie Lee Byrne, a 20-year-old Canadian animal trainer, slipped into the whale pool. One of the orcas grabbed her leg and wouldn\u2019t let go. The other whales, including Tilikum, prevented anyone from rescuing Keltie.<\/p>\n

Then, in 1999, 27-year-old Daniel Dukes, an unhoused man from South Carolina, hid in SeaWorld premises until the park closed. He decided to climb into Tilikum\u2019s pool. Daniel\u2019s body was found the next day, floating in the water.<\/p>\n

Dawn, of course, was aware of Tilikum\u2019s previous aggressive behaviors, though her relationship with him made her feel safe and in control when working with him.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been said the trainer loved the whale, and in turn, he, too, felt affection for Dawn. As far as many were concerned, it was a heartwarming display of human-animal connection that few others could ever achieve.<\/p>\n

However, the SeaWorld audience in Orlando that day would soon be confronted with the idea that Tilikum wasn\u2019t a domesticated orca who preferred life in captivity. Despite being captured as a calf in 1983, he was still very much a wild apex predator.<\/p>\n

Since he\u2019d been held captive for decades, he didn\u2019t know how to communicate with other whales, nor did he get to roam the ocean and hunt for prey.<\/p>\n

For reasons unknown, he chose Dawn as his prey that fateful February afternoon.<\/p>\n

\"\"After the performance, Dawn fed Tilikum fish as she conversed with the crowd. She sat by the pool, and suddenly, the orca lunged toward her, grabbed her ponytail, and dragged her underwater.<\/p>\n

Dawn was no match for the whale, who began thrashing her about repeatedly.<\/p>\n

Other trainers tried to stop him, distracting him with food or using nets to put an end to the attack. The attempts were fruitless. For 30 minutes, he kept Dawn in his clutches.<\/p>\n

Her injuries were a testament to just how brutal the attack was: her spinal cord had been cut. Her ribs and jawbone had been broken, and her knees dislocated. Horrifically, her scalp had been torn off.<\/p>\n

The audience bore witness to much of the attack taking place.<\/p>\n

After a half-hour standoff, Tilikum eventually released Dawn and was ushered into a smaller pool.<\/p>\n

Dawn\u2019s body was recovered, and the subsequent autopsy found she\u2019d passed from drowning and blunt force trauma.<\/p>\n

Spectators were shocked, perhaps unaware that these wild animals were capable of such ferociousness.<\/p>\n

While the event was awful for Dawn and her bereft family, it was also a catalyst for opening up the conversation about the welfare of marine mammals in captivity.<\/p>\n

The Aftermath\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The shock and outrage of Dawn\u2019s passing went far beyond SeaWorld Orlando, sparking public outcry, heavy media coverage, and a never before considered discourse as to how marine parks truly operate.<\/p>\n

It seems many of the paying audience were unaware of how orcas come to find themselves in captivity.<\/p>\n

They weren\u2019t rescued or saved from hunting; often, the calves were captured after their mother had been eliminated. The sole purpose of capturing the calf was to place it in an artificial environment and train it to participate in the SeaWorld shows.<\/p>\n

When confronted with shouldering the blame for Dawn\u2019s passing, SeaWorld initially took a very cold stance. They suggested that Dawn\u2019s decision to wear a ponytail potentially triggered Tilikum to grab her.<\/p>\n

This response did little to pacify the baying public and likely did much less to absolve Dawn\u2019s family of their heartache.<\/p>\n

To prevent a similar incident from occurring, SeaWorld banned their trainers from entering the pool when performing a show.<\/p>\n

The media then got wind of Tilikum\u2019s aggressive past. PETA and The Humane Society waded in on the conversation, insisting behavioral issues are commonplace in orcas forced into captivity, and pointed to the two previous deaths he\u2019d been a part of prior to Dawn\u2019s.<\/p>\n

\"\"There was no denying that the attack on Dawn wasn\u2019t an isolated incident and was preventable.<\/p>\n

Then, 13 years after the sad incident, the documentary Blackfish further analyzed the event. It laid the blame for the event firmly at SeaWorld\u2019s feet, detailing how Tilikum\u2014and orcas like him\u2014endured traumatic captures just to serve as exhibits for the paying public.<\/p>\n

Their lives at the theme parks they were kept at weren\u2019t nourishing. In fact, the documentary exposes how harmful the small, concrete pools of SeaWorld are to the animals and how stripping them of companionship leads to aggression.<\/p>\n

The documentary was widely seen and caused an immediate wave of backlash to hit SeaWorld. Their stock value plummeted, many people chose to boycott their theme parks, and change was demanded.<\/p>\n

Even celebrities took to social media to plead with the company to reform its business model. Protests and marches took place to demand SeaWorld release their captive orcas back into the ocean.<\/p>\n

SeaWorld\u2019s response was met with skepticism. They painted the company as conserving and caring for endangered species.<\/p>\n

Three years after the documentary first aired, SeaWorld announced in 2016 that it would be phasing out theatrical orca shows and ending its orca breeding program.<\/p>\n

Now, the theme parks have somewhat changed the way they do things: they place a greater emphasis on education and conservation, and the orcas in their care have been rescued.<\/p>\n

The orcas who have been rescued and cannot be rehabilitated and released remain at SeaWorld as part of their educational shows.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Tilikum sadly passed away. He\u2019d spent 32 of his 35 years in captivity. His passing was ruled to be from a bacterial infection.<\/p>\n
