Fast food giant Burger King has responded after one of its former employees went viral shortly before being fired amid controversial circumstances.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Earlier this week we\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0on Nykia Hamilton, who rose to online fame after her nigh-on heroic efforts at one Burger King branch in Columbia, South Carolina in July.<\/p>\n

Reports at the time\u00a0<\/a>detailed how the mom-of-three was the\u00a0only\u00a0<\/em>employee working that day, meaning she had to organize and see to all the stations by herself, including the front desk, the drive-thru counter, and of course the making of the food itself.<\/p>\n

\u201c[She\u2019s] doing the fries, the burger, the chicken sandwiches. She\u2019s doing everything by herself,\u201d one customer who filmed Hamilton said, in a clip that later went viral.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s doing everything she needs to do to make sure everybody is okay in here.\u201d<\/p>\n

There then came a bitter twist to the story, however, when the single mom revealed she had been fired from her position at Burger King due to turning up late on account of her children.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Burger King] fired me because I\u2019ve been late because of my kids,\u201d the 25-year-old revealed to followers on TikTok. \u201cMy kids come first. Y\u2019all don\u2019t pay for no babysitter, or nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m already aggravated, I\u2019m already depressed, all of this mental s***, and motherf****** fucking with me, so leave me alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u00a0GoFundMe page<\/a>\u00a0set up in the days that followed her dismissal has thus far raised over $108,000.<\/p>\n

Her story gained such exposure that Burger King themselves have now sought to clarify details relating to her firing. In a statement issued\u00a0to the New York Post<\/a>, they confirmed that Hamilton had indeed lost her job.<\/p>\n

\u201cTerminations are the decision of the franchisees who own and operate the BK restaurant,\u201d a spokesperson for\u00a0Burger King<\/a>\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn this situation, the franchisee confirmed that the individual involved is no longer employed due to repeated attendance issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

They also expressed dismay that Hamilton had been forced to run an entire restaurant by herself.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo team member should ever be left to run a restaurant alone, even for a short period of time,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not how we operate and we\u2019re disappointed that our policy, which required more than one team member to work per shift, wasn\u2019t followed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile we can\u2019t share more on individual personnel matters, we\u2019re focused on making sure every restaurant, whether company or franchise-owned has the staffing and support needed to take care of our team members and deliver the kind of experience our guests expect.\u201d<\/p>\n
