Black World War II Veteran from Virginia Turns 106 Years Old
Nationwide — Purcell Bailey, an African American army veteran who served during WWII, recently turned 106 years old. Family and friends in Surry County, Virginia, honored his life of service, history, and resilience with a heartfelt gathering.
As part of the corps, Bailey joined archaeological digs along the Colonial Parkway and helped uncover artifacts that highlighted America’s early history. He often visited historic sites such as Jamestown during this period.
When World War II began, Bailey enlisted in the Army and served in the European Theater. His service placed him among the millions of soldiers who fought overseas during one of the most defining conflicts of the 20th century.
